While this piece has the full appearance of utilizing naturally carved wood blocks, these are actually handcrafted and laminated blocks that I create from scratch using 6x6 and 4x6 beams as a starting point. I’ve found that using dimensional lumber at the start ensures a solid and safe sculpture, as natural wood, especially when cut into large blocks, tends to dry haphazardly and change shape in time. Each of my blocks is formed and then cut, carved, and manipulated to appear as natural. It’s a labor-intensive and painstaking process— but one that ensures a remarkably solid and stable totem throughout its life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sculpture photographed is Totem #74 and is installed at a private home in Bethesda, MD.
